The students will understand the importance of social support and sense of belonging in promoting positive mental health and wellbeing.
Ask the students what groups they belong to. This can include classroom groups, school community groups, sporting groups, drama clubs, singing groups, friendship groups, recreational groups, family groups etc. List these groups on the board.
Discuss the various roles within some of the groups, and the reasons for having these roles.
Ask the students to imagine that they weren’t a member of particular groups, and what sorts of things they might miss out on. E.g. if they were no longer a member of a particular sporting group, they would miss out on interacting with others, some fitness opportunities, playing a game they enjoyed, a sense of freedom, skill development etc.
Individually or in pairs, ask the students to write an exposition text on the benefits of belonging to social groups / networks, not only for them but for the wider community. Children will reflect on the benefits of having a sense of belonging and how it can promote mental health and wellbeing.
As a conclusion to the unit, watch the short video “You can be a Champion” and discuss what being part of a team means.
