Unit 2 – Health Benefits of Physical Activity

Lessons 5 – 6: Valuing Diversity

Learning Intention

By exploring initiatives sporting and community groups use to counter discrimination and support the wellbeing of their communities, students will investigate and reflect on how valuing diversity positively influences the wellbeing of the community.

Activity A

Introduce the term “inclusive” and discuss its meaning in a broad context and then a sporting context. Explain that this lesson will focus on physical activities and games that enable people of all abilities to participate.

Watch the short video ‘You can be a Champion’ presented by Paralympic Athlete Evan O’Hanlan where Evan discusses his disability and experiences as a child.

Activity B

Ask students to brainstorm sports they have seen in the Paralympic Games. The handout Some Modified Games (U2L5-6R2) will help generate some ideas. For each sport they name, discuss:

  • What Olympic sport is it similar to?
  • How is it different from the Olympic sport?
  • What disadvantages the participants would have without the modified rules.

Activity C

Explain that most sports played in the Paralympics are based on Olympic sports, but may have been modified or adapted to enable athletes with a disability to compete at an elite level.

Teach students how to play Sitting Volleyball, which is a Paralympic sport.

Activity D

Introduce worksheet Game Changer (U2L5-6R1)

Students reflect on the game played

  • How they were made more inclusive?
  • How did you feel during the game?
  • How did you feel after the game?

And list the modifications made to each game e.g.

  • Size of playing area
  • Number of players
  • Equipment used
  • Rules

Explain to students that sports are not only modified for students with a disability, but for many other reasons.

Discuss possible reasons games are modified in a school setting.

Activity E

Introduce the TREE model for modifying games to make them more inclusive.

In small groups, students design a modified game that can be played outdoors in the playground during breaks, at home or at the park.
