Learning Intention

The students will reflect on their own strengths and uniqueness, and continue to build their own sense of self worth and self esteem.

Activity A

Discuss how every student is unique, special and an equal and important member of the class community. Discuss how sometimes a low sense of self worth or self esteem can prevent us from helping others, or even ourself, when faced with a threatening situation. Students create a personal ID card for themselves using the ID card templates (U3L1R1). Personal attributes to include on the card are:

  • Appearance - physical
  • Interests - hobbies / sports
  • Responsibilities - duties at home
  • Strengths - sense of humour, caring, helpful etc

These ID cards can be displayed around the classroom.

Activity B

Students brainstorm positive attributes about each other. Build up a list of positive attributes and discuss:

  • What are some similarities or differences with others in the group
  • Whom they admire

Activity C

Lead a discussion on how sometimes a low sense of self worth or self esteem can prevent us from helping others, or even ourself, when faced with a threatening situation.

Activity D

Watch the short video 'The Power of Your Mind' where AIS athletes discuss how they keep a positive attitude to help them in their sport. Discuss the importance of being true to yourself, of setting achievable goals and having a positive attitude.

Teacher Notes

This could be completed as an art activity where students create an image of themselves which is passed around the group for students to write positive attributes on. Sensitivity may be needed when forming groups.
