Brainstorm: What safety issues might you encounter in your daily life? List responses.
Discuss that this unit is focusing on identifying safe and unsafe situations at home, school, parties and in the community. This can include strategies for dealing with unsafe or uncomfortable situations, practices when using Information and Communication Technology (ICT) and online services, as well as safety when participating in physical activity.
Brainstorm links between positive relationships and safety in all of the above contexts.
As these words are displayed, discuss the way relationships today are often conducted. While many are face to face, such as the relationship students have with their school friends, their teachers, their sporting groups, their parents, siblings etc., many relationships are also experienced online.
Discuss that regardless of the setting - whether it be a face to face relationship or one that is online, there are certain protocols, or etiquettes that need to be followed to ensure that our relationships are enhanced, and that will also protect their mental, physical and emotional wellbeing.
The students brainstorm social etiquettes and protocols within a face to face social setting, as well as online.
The term “Netiquette” is introduced. After discussion of the term and it’s relevance to online social protocols, ask the students write an Acrostic poem (U4L1R1)about Netiquette for display around the room.
As a class, students discuss how these protocols and etiquettes can enhance their relationships with others and protect their wellbeing.
