Time to Celebrate!

Learning Intention

The students will explore and celebrate how cultures differ in behaviours, beliefs and values. They will explore how family, peers and the media influence how individuals interact in common celebrations.

Activity A

Discuss how food choices are made, including the social context. Relate students’ food choices in a variety of settings, e.g. takeaway food store, school canteen, celebrations.

Activity B

Decide on one celebration to research using the 'Diversity and Celebrations Across Our Globe" worksheet (U1L13R1) (e.g. birthdays, funerals, marriage). Divide the class into 3 groups. Each group is responsible for researching and reporting on that celebration from one of the following cultures.

  • Traditional Australian Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islanders
  • Modern Australia
  • One Asian culture of the students choosing.

On completion of the research sheet, students will compare, contrast and share the results of their research with their peers.

Extension Activities

Extension Activity 1

Using the Cooking at Home with the AIS Recipes Handout (U1L13R2), the students are to select and cook one of the meals. The students can bring some in to share with the class as a way of celebrating both the successful completion of the unit, and celebrate different cultures.

Food habits are influenced by social needs. Food is an integral part in celebrations, and in the modern Australian culture, the media plays a large part in forming our attitude and values to how we celebrate various events, particularly in what foods we choose to use.
